#6885 "It frustrates me when someone denies the effects of privilege and/or oppression."
I identify with this and here's my story. It's about time to get it off my chest.
There's a good saying in the country I come from and that is "Don't judge and you will not be judged." I have never understood people who give me looks and call me privileged in my face or behind my back when they find out I come from a rich family. I am also white and a Jew.
In my high school I was bullied by kids on a constant basis because I am a Jew. That's just how things were there. Funny, because we were not even that religious, my name and appearance just gave it away. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to ask me about it. In addition, kids in my high-school were on the richer side and very open about it; hence, more bullying and more harassment for me because nobody knew I came from a rich family. I was called a “cheap piece of shit.” But I was taught to be humble around my classmates which meant not telling anyone about travelling outside of the country 4-5 times a year with my family, wearing clothes that would look plain and simple, and not being able to invite my classmates to visit my house. I do not blame my family, I am glad that was the way I was brought up. I’d rather not have any friends than have friends who only like me for money. In the end of it all, I graduated high school with a little below 4.0, no friends, and a strong feeling I was a shitty person even though I did nothing wrong. So much for being white and privileged.
Now I go to UMD. And I feel blessed to have found the community of people that accept me for who I am, and not for my looks, my money, or the origins of my last name. It pains me, however, to see judgmental generalizations about people and their privileges on this page. I just want to urge all of you to stop before you think about judging somebody. Everyone deserves a chance to show you who they really are before you jump into conclusions.
