#7981 I'm really passionate about medieval weaponry (mainly European, but also Japanese), and I get really annoyed by all the weeaboos who think the "katana = best sword evar!!1!" and often deride European swordsmanship/combat/armor as being "inferior" or that "a samurai could totally kick a knight's ass!"
First off, there is no such thing as a best sword or weapon. Anyone who unironically says that is full of shit. It all depends on the situation, your training, and what you're up against. A (primarily) slashing sword like a katana would be able to deal with light armor or leather lamellar, but it ain't gonna do shit against something like European steel plate.
Yes, despite the glorification of the katana's "cutting power," plate armor was designed to keep swords away and was really fucking good at that. If you wanted to circumvent plate armor, you'd be much better suited with something like a war pick, hammer, or pole-axe. But those aren't as "cool" as katanas.
Samurai didn't even use katanas in battle that much anyway. They typically used huge-ass bows (yumi) from horseback and, if in close quarters, resorted to the yari (spear) or naginata (halberd). In fact, the Japanese warrior's way of life was typically refered to as "The Way of Horse and Bow."

tl;dr Katanas aren't bad weapons; they were good for the local needs of the land of their origin, but it's foolish to say that they're somehow the end-all-be-all of swords and superior to all European swords.
