#4970 To the person who got excited over a stranger saying hi to them - I'm glad you appreciated that. I have no way of knowing whether it was me or not, but I make a habit of smiling or greeting almost every single person I meet on campus throughout the day, and I think more people should. Sometimes we get caught up in life (whether it's work, school, technology, etc.) and forget that we're freaking humans! You were born, you're going to live and then you're going to die, and on that journey the amount of people you actually interact with and get to know on a personal level is a minuscule fraction of the world's population! Next time you pass someone, look at their face. Imagine and try to grasp the fact that this person has a life much like yours, but so unique and radically different at the same time. Behind those eyes is a story that you will never truly know or understand, that is, not unless you make the effort to be a part of it. I'm not saying every "hello" or flashing of the pearly whites is going to lead to a new friendship, or even that you'll ever see that person again. Maybe it will simply bring them comfort on a particularly rough day. My point is that nowadays, so rarely do we extend courtesy to others; so rarely do we even acknowledge the existence of people unless they play a direct role in our lives. What do you have to lose? They ignore you or simply look away...but what do you have to gain? Everything! The potential for friendships, relationships, or at the bare minimum it's just one more connection you've made or interaction you've shared with another breathing, living person. If people just made more of an effort to be friendlier toward others with no ulterior motive or reason then the world, even if it's just a SLIGHT change, would be a better place. I challenge all of you today to strike a conversation with a stranger, offer a warm smile or greeting to a fellow human as you pass them, hold the door for the person behind you...even if it inconveniences you a little. You never know what difference a simple gesture might make, and you never know what might come from it. I'm not religious, I'm not a "peace and love" nut, I'm not naive and trying to tell you that all the world's problems will be solved, and I'm most definitely not trying to come off as a high and mighty preacher. I don't have my shit together and I'm the furthest thing from perfect or a role model. I just love meeting new people, having pleasant conversations and making others happy...because doing so makes me happy. And I want other people to experience the same feeling. Rant over, have an amazing day Terps!

#4969 I know one day I will have to stop listening to violent, misogynistic rap music riddled with lyrics referencing drugs and general hedonism but I'm not ready yet...

#4967 So throughout high school, I had social anxiety. I had little to no friends, and the ones I did have were pretty much school-exclusive. I never had anyone over except my childhood friend whom I've been friends with since we were little. I never lived in the neighborhood where people in my school lived, and I was in therapy multiple times because of my awkward social life. I never felt good enough for anyone and I just watched tv or played video games alone. I didn't like to talk to anyone because I felt like I was always scrutinized.
It definitely took a turn for the better in college, that's for sure. I found other people who share my interests and they are some of the best friends I've had in a while. I finally started reaching out. But I still feel really under-appreciated. I feel like I'm always the one who has to initiate that first text. Like if I were to suddenly stop communicating with them I wouldn't even be acknowledged. I know it must sound annoying to say that because you get out what you put in, and you have to spend to make. I understand that, I really understand that. But why is it always me? I can't even hang out with people in my floor because one day I just decided to wait and see how long it took to hear from them. I'm still waiting. If you enjoy my company, why am I the one who's stuck maintaining the friendship? I'm done trying to figure people out. If you don't want to be friends, don't raise my hopes in the beginning and leave me to fall on my face. I'll be in charge of my own happiness. Maybe I'm still trying to make sense of my stress, but this felt really good to write.
tl;dr Treasure your friends and make sure they know you appreciate them.

#4964 I have no idea how to converse with most other humans outside of work/class (since in that case it's usually about homework or if they can borrow something from me), usually because I have no idea what to talk about. Is it about anime, video games, computers, or music? No? Then what the bloody fuck do we talk about?
How do I words?

#4963 I've completely stopped giving a shit when buying plan b. I don't nervously whisper to the pharmacist when I'm sure no one is in earshot. I own it. Yeah, I had sex and the condom broke. Bite me.
