#26011 Serious attempt to empathize with the average trump supporter (taking the most optimistic approach at understanding that mindset as possible) and also an attempt to start a discussion on figuring out how to address the white fragility problem int his country instead of easily making fun of it from a safe distance:

Like many of the Trump-supporting type, they probably grew up in a simple, rural, environment that shaped their views at a young age. They believe that all you need to do in life is treat others with the kindness you want to be treated with yourself. Be polite, friendly and don't be an asshole. That's it.

He/she probably lacks the social skills to be genuine in empathizing with the complex, nuanced identities of humans from various other cultures and their life experiences and feels that having dialogue with them folk is a difficult balancing act in which one moment of failure results in being branded as rural trash, a move that permanently devalues them as a human being.

And they're right - they will pay a price for their white tears if an outburst occurs and it might prevent them from getting as much work now that they've publicly been called out on contributing to systematic oppression. Might even have to move away to places where the gene pool gets thinner and where a predatory corporate monument like Wal-Mart is the only reliable place in town to get a 9-5. Many of these towns are rotting from within. How many of your days would you want to spend in a dead end Appalachia-esque, bleak, boring nowheresville?

According to their individualized world view shaped by their unchangeable past, a past rooted in a problematic culture that they probably had little to no control over internalizing to a large degree, they feel slighted and hurt. Is it actual suffering? Like "I have to hustle my entire life and prove myself to be a human several times every day to maintain a moderately acceptable quality of life, IF that" suffering/oppression that leads to actual physical and mental health problems? Fuck no.

But to them, the "social justice warriors" are rude and mean and they don't understand why they are being treated like a lesser person when they work their butt off every day to make an honest, simple livin'. And if they feel like this will continue, he/she and the large amount of voters who share their perspective might vote for Trump again and usher in more of this shitshow that results in increased hate crimes and racist terrorism.

Now, maybe I'm off base, but growing up around rural white people myself, I think that's a pretty accurate portrait of someone who might vote for Trump. Someone who might also vote Trump in for a second term. What do you do with this person? How do you interact with them in society to prevent another whitelash?

On one hand, stroking their white egos and pretending the problem doesn't exist in favor of playing ball with them and persuading them to vote left or libertarian instead of Trump might prevent another whitelash, but it also perpetuates suffering for those in society who are harmed by Trump's shitshow.

Or Trump supporters like them can keep being put on blast, publicly shamed, fired etc and that might ease suffering of minorities experiencing actual oppression short-term, but might get Trump in for a second term, possibly making things even worse. Trump, a literal con man who rants about mexicans and literally has mafia/white supremacist connections. A guy who is a corporate shill (and arguably only good at that because of his inheritance that gave him a leg up) who we have no idea what to expect from as a president given how much of what he says is lying, trolling, anger, performing, angst, etc.

This is the clusterfuck we are in now as a country. What do we do about it?

#26005 If you live on campus, you should find your hall club FB page! You guys pay club fees each semester you're here and sometimes (often) they aren't being used as much as they should. Their FB page advertises programs they're putting on for you, and I'm sure they'd even buy you free food from any participating Arby's if you asked (they're always open to suggestions).
