Knowing how difficult it is to answer difficult questions about your own sexuality in such a puritanical society, I was inclined to be supportive, and understanding, if a bit crushed. I've always known she was bisexual, and it is really no shock that she might be interested in experimenting with a more emotional relationship with a woman.

That said, literally 12 hours ago she discussed marriage plans with me, repeatedly expressed her desire to have children with me, and assured me of her unwavering love for me. A week ago, she handed me a card claiming she could never imagine being without me and would forever try to win my heart should I lose interest.

She admitted that she hasn't been attracted to a man or wanted to have sex with me in months. She's been feeling this way for months.

For all of you who may be in the closet, struggling with how to define your sexuality, or in relationship with someone of the wrong sex, without diminishing or overlooking your own struggles and battles with prejudice and existential realities, try to be empathetic and caring for those whom love you, even if you are no longer attracted to them. No matter how tough and frightening the shame of admitting your feelings to them may be, you have a moral obligation to communicate your feelings with them. Stringing them along for months, claiming your unwavering commitment and dreams of a future may delay the difficult (but inevitable) situation of expressing your confusion and feelings, but it is unempathetic, selfish, and inexcusable behavior.

Remember, love is the unselfish willing for the good of the other, romantic or otherwise.
