#13902 Help me understand why both religious and non-religious people emphasize so much on marriage? What is it? A social construct to convey to family and friends that two people got together? A license to have sex with each other without having the society judge you?

I understand if religious people attribute some kind of divine significance to marriage by referring to the religious books. But, Why do non-religious people put so much importance to marriage? If two people love each other and wish to spend their time together, why does it matter if they have rings on each other's fingers or if they publicized the event?

#13810 Cops scare me. I do not feel safe around law enforcement officers. I do not feel safe in my home, in my car, on the street, especially at night by the bars. I don't feel free. I don't feel protected. Per capita, you're statistically more likely to be killed by a cop in this country than by some guy out on the street. I don't want to leave because of Obama. I don't want to leave because of Bush. I don't want to leave because of Republicans or Democrats. I want to leave because I'm sick of wondering if a cop having a bad day is going be intensely detrimental to the rest of my life in a way that another cop would not be.

#13838 I'm not racist nor being stereotypical, but why are some people think they are underrepresented here at Purdue because of their color? I was talking to someone, and he told me that African-Americans are underrepresented, and said only few African-Americans were accepted here at Purdue. As I make conversation to other African Americans, they keep saying they are under represented......I love people of all colors. However, Purdue has a high standard when they are accepting someone. GPA, SAT & ACT scores and extra curricular activities are main factors that get you here. Just sayin....
