#30533 Ive always been fascinated with the Columbine school shootings back in 99. Lots of big changes were happening in America at that time if you study it a bit or lived at that time. The goth look was in. You had this rock/rap combo music scene. The new millennium was coming up. The internet was just about to become big time. Add in regular teen angst. It was the perfect storm for something bad to happen in an American HS. Ive seen Bowling for Columbine a number of times but I wish there were more documentaries about that day.

#30480 I understand what you're trying to say about this being a people's problem too. But your example about the church shooting where a good guy shot the bad guy and prevented more deaths is flawed. If no one had guns in the first place, the bad guy himself wouldn't have a gun. Take Australia, for example, they enacted severe gun laws decades ago and haven't had a shooting since. The only thing people feel they need guns to defend themselves against are guns themselves. If you ban them altogether, the problem is solved at it's root. All this is only possible if the current administration stops kissing the NRA's ass and do something about this instead of simply sending out thoughts and prayers which don't mean shit if you're not willing to act. Fuck all of you who support guns. Everyone of you is responsible for the shootings. Please prevent future shooting by growing a brain and banning guns!

#30498 Recently discovering the challenges that come with being a counselor-in-training at this university. So basically I attempt to treat students who suffer from daily struggles - stress, being dehumanized/devalued, abuse survivors with various forms of trauma, and my heart goes out to them and I do what I can to help. It gets complicated though when your patient is clearly trash and attempting to be someone they're not, and it’s like I’m expected to stroke their ego and pretend I’m not aware of what they're up to? Sometimes patients will attempt to manipulate counselors into feeling sympathy for them even when you can tell within seconds by observing their expressions and body language that they’re just garbage people who aren't deserving of any.
For anyone wondering, my treatment methods primarily involve helping patients meet their needs (not wants) while showing them how to develop coping skills for hardships they face. Either that or I give them a bit of advice on how to change for the sake of those around them if nothing else. As anyone with common sense knows, not everyone with mental illness is a good person or someone worthy of respect or sympathy. I’m not there to inflate anyone's ego and pretend they aren't heartless and I refuse to entertain their delusions. So as a way of emotionally protecting myself and those whom the patient interacts with daily while also gradually showing them the door, I get a read on them in roughly a minute (sometimes a bit more, sometimes less) so they can be prescribed medication for their chemical imbalance and then I employ neurolinguistic hypnosis techniques that help subconsciously program them to be comfortable with themselves without their awareness of it. I do this instead of allowing them to continue on with trading self awareness for some deluded sense of becoming a good person (this is harmful to the patient AND those around them). That's just my informed opinion, and it is a controversial one in the field (you could be accused of "manipulating" someone into a "regressed state of mental health", when in actuality that is their natural, normal state of being without ego and illnesses that stem from ego). Some of my peers and one of my mentors has challenged me on this. I won't go into a dissertation here, but basically I'm struggling with balancing my realistic mental wellness philosophy that's focused on compassion for those who deserve it while also having a successful career as someone who helps as many patients as possible, and I feel like flawed rules set in place via outdated university regulations are holding me back from doing my job properly, so not sure what to do atm.
Is anyone else experiencing similar frustrations with their career? How do you personally deal with toxic people in your professional life?

#30540 I'm in agreement with
#30485. People in the comments who are like "dictionary definition" are essentially saying the dictionary is infallible. Or somehow legally binding things are correct. Show me evidence that there is something other than your chromosomes that determines your gender. You say things like sex is biological but gender is not. Nobody is stopping acting however they like. But if you are man, you cannot force me to call you a woman. You want me to pretend you are what you are not, which would make me a liar.
