We often hear this being equated with "a hand-out" and, if your parents are the ones paying for your education, I can see why it is easy to think that way. The establishment of a university system that boasts free tuition is not about handing out degrees. It is about allowing those who would not otherwise have the chance gain a college education without incurring crushing debt.

Whether you are conservative, liberal, or whatever else, it can be easily seen that young adults pursuing college degrees are being treated as profit centers. Even if you account for inflation, college tuition has been raised to truly ludicrous levels.

Tuition freezes cannot solve this problem because, again, they are not based on inflation. Only a large-scale reduction or tuition-free option can do so. However, education is not the only industry that has experienced insane price hikes. It also exists in pharmaceuticals and other industries. A country with such asinine price hikes cannot expect its population to remain prosperous in the long term.

College is a privilege, I agree, but it is a privilege people should be allowed to pursue no matter how much capital is in their pockets.
