#1202 The whole MPIRG battle was good because everyone enjoyed it, not because either side won. A lot of people on this campus really seem to enjoy political battles. They love to play the activist, the politician, the strategist, the debater. That's the real purpose MCSG and events like the MPIRG battle: they are play fighting. As the cheetah cub and the wolf pup, mac kids prepare for adulthood through these types of campus skirmishes, and they have a blast doing it.

Its also a great opportunity for people to talk about how unimpressed and fed up they are with the fight, and how above it all they really are.

Long story short, everyone has some fun and gets something out of it in the end, and no real harm (or any significant outcome, for that matter) occurs.

#1199 I'm white, and everyone I'm related to is white, but my dad has this dark muddy brown complexion to him. I've always had this memory of when I was in first grade I drew a picture of my family: 4 stick people holding hands and smiling. A tall carnation pink boy, a short carnation pink boy, a squatty carnation pink lady, and a large black man. I showed the picture to my teacher and family and they laughed at the mistake I made, and let me in that my illustration didn't reflect the current family situation. I thought it was funny too and from then on, used tan or something for my dad in drawings.

Fast forward to two weeks ago, it dawns on me that 'white' is a broad distinction for whole ranges of colors and looks of people (thanks, college!) I'm western/central European, and I don't look anything like my eastern European or Scandinavian white friends. And tonight I realize, tan wasn't a more appropriate color for my dad, it just gave the impression that he's a white guy. So here we are. Race is a goddamned social construct. Boy do I feel like a dupe
