#2005 I'm truly sorry about giving the impression of shaming and making it sound easy to learn a language. I am currently taking language courses and some of them really make me anxious. I also truly appreciate the importance of science in our society, we wouldn't be having this conversation if nobody studied and developed science.

But I feel the need to point out that it's still debatable for you whether you want to learn another language or not. For many others it's not.

Personally while I was young I had to invest my energy to study English instead of the language of my ethnicity. Ever time my father tried to tell me about a fable he had to translate it to me. One day I discovered that he dream talks in that language too. I realized that there's a part of him that I will never understand.

It is a human thing to learn language on several levels. Firstly, for you to learn to speak your parents' tongue as a kid, as Ian mentioned. Secondly, if everyone learns a foreign language in use, maybe sometime in the distant future, everyone is able to learn their parents' tongue as a kid?

#2001 It's not about the struggles. It's about the linguistic inequalities that exist as a colonial legacy and an ONGOING neocolonial process. Languages are dying because people rather learn a more economically beneficial language rather than their native languages. Here's a chance that you can personally contribute to a change. There are 11 languages offered. It is really not that hard to be interested in at least one of them and the culture it carries.

Learning foreign languages also just makes me appreciate the efforts of people who try really hard to learn my native language to simply converse with me.

But I realize the complexity and disparity in American education systems too. And I've also been taking language classes here at Mac and some of them were not as fun as I expected. My point is a person should at least learn a foreign language at some point in their life. Given the context mentioned above, it's a basic human thing to do.

#2004 Oh my god. Where are the trash bins? I respect zero waste, but let's be real: people are going to generate the same amount of trash whether or not there are trash bins to receive it. It's just making exam week harder, especially when we need to throw stuff away. Where are my empty Cheez-it bags supposed to go?!?!?

#2003 I'm secretly in love with my guy friend who has a boyfriend and its awful because he literally has no clue and there's no point in me telling him because he has a boyfriend he loves but also I really want to tell him at some point but how do you casually tell someone that you love them in a friend way but also in a romantic way but also respect their relationship and happiness with someone else without being creepy?

#2002 The difference between the language requirement and the other GenEd classes is that everybody has to take the same amount of GenEds, regardless of what their high school offered. However, if somebody's high school did not offer language, it automatically fucks them over in terms of what classes they can take; if somebody wants to double-major, they would have the ability to only if their high school offered language, which is completely out of their control. Let's not punish people for what their high school did or didn't offer, and instead let people take language if they want to and let them not take it if they don't want to or don't have the need to.
