#2016 Studying abroad at a school that's located in a city where there is a very big drinking culture has showed me how much a lot of Mac students are being closed minded and are too worried about how they're perceived by others. I feel most Mac students don't want to be that kid that got "too drunk"--and by too drunk I don't even mean throwing up--I just mean drunk enough that maybe they're silly or very obviously lacking inhibitions. Definitely not everyone at Mac would do this, but I have been judged at Mac before for drinking 2 nights a week and even called an "alcoholic" in one incident for doing that. That is absurd. How about a fairly "average college kid"? Why do you have to put someone down because they enjoy drinking if it's not negatively impacting their lives? Macalester students are afraid of seeming like they need alcohol to have fun. They feel the need to put themselves above the image of drinking often or a lot because of it. But you know what? Students at my study abroad school are not worried about it, nor DO they need to drink to have fun. They just drink because it is fun for them and it's accepted to drink. I think Mac students could really learn from the partying culture at my study abroad school. People have the option to drink more here (I've ended up drinking 2-3 times/week here and have about 8 standard drinks each time as a female) and have a great time because we're not worried about being perceived as "needing" alcohol to have fun, and because everyone gets as drunk as they want, there is no such thing as the one kid who got too drunk. There is no judgment. People drink a lot more because it's more accepted to drink and in result have a lot more fun not worrying about how they're coming off. My study abroad school is a very good school. Students drink a lot but they also care about studies. And no, I don't see people taking it too far to the point of life endangerment anymore often than I've seen at Mac, probably because people know their limits. All I'm saying is, can we all just relax, stop worrying, and have a good time together?
