Disclaimer: I apologize in advance for the length of this post, but I feel it's necessary in order to accurately establish the point that I would like to make. :)

I am a pretty, smart, white female from a financially comfortable family. I go out occasionally, but it isn't my biggest interest (however, just like most of us, I have spent more than my fair share of nights drunkenly embarrassing myself...$.50 wells kill me). Just by looking at me, most people would likely assume that I'm self-absorbed, unworldly, and a complete brat. Those people would be wrong. I work 6-7 days a week, am a full-time student, and have a 3.99 GPA, though those are not the things that people usually find to be the most surprising things about me. Instead, people are usually the most surprised to find out that, despite my looks and privileged upbringing, I treat absolutely everyone as my equal, no matter the circumstance.

I have met too many people in my life (including during my time at UNT) who, judging solely by the way they treat other people, think that they are somehow "better." If you have more money, that makes you richer; more friends, that makes you more popular; better clothes, that makes you more stylish; more intellect, that makes you smarter; a better physical appearance, that makes you more attractive...but it does not make you better or give you any evidence whatsoever to support that you are better than anyone else. There is never an excuse to treat anyone as if they are beneath, or any less of a person than, you.

The reason I described myself is because the girls that I see (although, guys, there are plenty of you, too) treating other people the way that I mentioned above are usually, superficially, very similar to me. I have found that some of the prettiest people can do the ugliest things, and it's so disappointing to see anyone think that it's okay to do so simply because of how they look or what they have.

I may be pretty and I may have a generally ideal life that many people would die to have, but I still believe in, for example, never passing a janitor with smiling and stopping to ask how his/her day is going. So, to anyone who has been, in any area of life, less privileged than me, and/or who has ever met anyone who made them feel small, I would like you to know this: it takes a much bigger person to live your life than it does to live mine (or a life like mine), and I think you are all absolutely incredible and have so much respect for every single one of you. Fuck anyone--no matter who they are, what they have, how they look, whatever--that ever treats you as if you are anything less.

I'm a diagnosed schizophrenic. Going to campus every day to a class that requires social interaction is so incredibly stressful that I often contemplate dropping and just becoming a janitor who lives in a studio. There is a huge stigma against people with mental illness. You're often labeled as crazy person and tossed aside or seen as a problem to be dealt with. I understand there are plenty of people with mental illness who deserve to be tossed aside or locked up (specifically ones who run a hate campaign or kill people) but for many like me, we feel just as awkward when having a conversation that displays our mood shifting all over the map as someone without mental illness does when they say something shameful or embarrassing in a social situation. The difference is that when you have a chemical imbalance it's incredibly hard for to control saying the bizarre things I HATE saying that end up freaking people out.
