#23890 I can't be bothered to look up the number for the earlier self-described progressive, but this is something of a response to that post. Not that it's that important, but I'm liberal socially, with a mixed ideology economically (which is what I'll focus on here). Firstly, I'm against welfare in a number of cases, especially if those receiving it due to unemployment are not actively searching for employment. This problem was prevalent in Britain until recent reforms, where people on welfare would make more off of welfare than a minimum-wage paying job, abusing the welfare system.

That said, however, I do believe that the current state of the American economy is biased in a way that promotes funneling of wealth to those who already have it, and not providing any channels for it to return to the majority of the people. As the top tenth of the top 1% makes as much as the bottom 90% (as Senator Sanders pointed out in his recent visit to Anaheim, California), there is no incentive for them to spend more than 10% of their income on things that any other American family would spend it on. The rest of it goes to a bank, potentially an offshore one in Panama or Switzerland so it can not be taxed.

This becomes especially apparent in the rising costs of education and the inability of poorer individuals to afford it without leaving heavily indebted, especially with the minimum wage where it is at currently. I'm skeptical about making college tuition-free, but I would hope that most people can get behind at least cutting costs elsewhere in government to make up for it (personally, my first targets would be excessive military spending, corporate subsidies, and welfare).

On the minimum wage, I do not believe raising the minimum wage is the answer to income inequality; rather I believe there should be a wage cap on the earnings of owners and CEOs of companies and corporations so that they can only earn, say, $100 for every $1 that their average paid employees make (in perspective, based on a 2015 Huffington Post statistic, many major CEOs make well over $1000 for every $1 that their average employee makes -source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ceo-worker-pay-gap_us_55ddc3c7e4b0a40aa3acd1c9).

Furthermore, in my opinion (it's ok if any of you disagree with me, FYI, we can agree to disagree), capital gains should also be restricted heavily by reinstating Glass-Steagall, and at least half of the things you've likely (or maybe not) heard Senator Sanders say over the course of this primary election.

I wrote this up because while I side with Sanders on many issues, I certainly still disagree with him in some ways, and I can appreciate some economic arguments coming from the right. If nobody gives a bull moose about what I think, then that's fine. However, I disapprove of the absurd divisiveness between the liberal and conservative camps in our political system, to the point when it's even blatantly obvious it exists on the freaking Purdue Confessions Facebook page. Disagreement is natural at a certain population size, but due to the trend of polarizing party opinions, it is necessary to put aside differences in ideals, and as Colin Powell asserted, "We must start making the compromises that arrive at a consensus and move the country forward."
