#26851 I have been here at Purdue for almost a year now, and yet I feel my english skill has not been improved much,cause no one really correct you when you mispronounce words or made grammatical errors. How do you guys feel when communicating with non native speakers? Do you put more effort and are you annoyed if they cant understand you (vice versa)? I really want to practice my english with people who is willing to help.
PS: I have been coming to english groups regularly, but once a week is not enough i guess.

#26850 I always thought that the dating scene in college would be wholly different from that in high school, but I couldn't be further from the truth. I had assumed I'd be dealing with adults and genuine people who respect each other or at least have the basic courtesy to be honest with each other. Instead, I found a kids playground where everyone is playing games, people talking about standards and "out of league" as if that's a real thing, dwelling into little irrational details about a person and judging their worth, playing hard to get, being emotionally manipulative, seeking approval and attention, and what not. I realized people can be immature, narcissistic, and selfish in college as they were in high school. I remember one date (girl I met thru Okcupid): after a nice evening where I took her to dinner and a play, she told me flat out that while she thought I was a nice guy, she didn't want to go out again because she was looking for a guy who essentially (a) looked like Ben Affleck, (b) as rich as Bill Gates, (c) was as athletic as Lance Armstrong. In other words, she Wanted It All, and wanted it gift-wrapped & delivered. I told her I hoped she found what she was looking for, but wondered if when she did, she'd get the same 'rejection spiel' from him?

Time, practice, gaining maturity, and always being out there eventually paid off. I found my smart, beautiful lady a year ago and we've been in a happy relationship since. But I always wonder if now too many folks are so obsessed with the quest for a fantasy partner that The Great American Marketing Machine tells them that not only exists, but is theirs by right, that they miss out on a lot of great folks in the meantime?
