#28153 I hate how society in this day and age teaches us that hatred and anger are things to be condemned. Properly harnessed and used, hatred and anger can be the fuel to push you forward that extra little bit that is needed to get someone through whatever threshold they are trying to breach. Hatred and anger is ok and is natural as long as you dont let it control you. Let people, situations, and actions piss you off. Fight back to get passed it. Let it fuel your desire to beat whatever it is you are trying to beat. When you are completely worn down and feel like you cant go on, let that hatred piss you off enough to take just one more step, then after that step, let it fuel you more and take another. Hatred and anger can be a very good thing if you use it properly. Yet it can utterly destroy you and those around you if you dont get control over it but when you do control it, that is when you go further than you expected because you hated someone or something so much you just had to prove them wrong. History is full of instances where hatred and anger have been used to a person advantage.

We need to quit acting like hatred and anger are a bad thing because it is not. It is human to be angry and to hate. Use it to get where you want to go, otherwise it is nothing but a waste of energy.

#28146 Really struggling right now with this semester. It was a rough summer, and this semester is just continuing the trend. I'm having problems with my living situation and all I feel is anxiety when I think of going back to my apartment. I want to speak up against the person making me feel this way, considering trying to avoid them isn't working, but that just makes me even more anxious. I don't know what to do to escape this hell hole.

#28152 I am going to attempt to organize my thoughts on the #takeaknee protest to offer a prospective that I think is being argued but not articulated.

To begin my argument, I want you to think abstractly about the national anthem. At face value, it is a song we play to represent our country. Obviously, it stands for much more than this to many people than if it were some sort of pledge of fealty. Specifically to myself, the anthem, the flag, and feelings of patriotism are reserved for the abstract spirit of America- that is the ethereal spirit of a government of the people, navigating the seas of the most diverse population on earth and attempting to find the objective truth and objective good for as many of its people as possible. Of course, we have not had a clean ride. Our past is riddled with unquestionable darkness. There are many injustices that still take place in America, and we must discuss them. But by kneeling for our anthem, one says "I disregard the tradition of respect for any and all progress that has been made in an attempt to bring to light the issues." No matter how noble your cause, you have now alienated everyone who believes the spirit of America can and will prevail through current inequalities. You are offensive for the same reason that burning the flag is offensive, because you have opened yourself to being interpreted as disrespectful to any and everything the anthem can inspire. An action causes a reaction, and by stating 'no, it means this' is no different than people justifying flying the confederate flag for southern pride when it can be taken as the symbol for an institution of slavery. You are being inconsiderate, tone-deaf, and blantantly ignorant to think that this can't be seen as affront to everything positive there is left to be found in being American.

We, as a nation, are only as divided as we perceive ourselves to be. To kneel during the anthem is to say to many that the infinite number of interpretations of the anthem are no longer possible of deserving your individual respect. Regardless of the virtue behind your gesture, the gesture in itself is offensive to anyone that believes in America's people and her ability to change, regardless of any type partisan stance.

tl;dr: the mechanism of delivery sucks.

#28144 I just recently turned 21 and I don't really have that many friends (I'm kind of a home-body). Is it sad to go to bars alone to just kind of people watch? (I'm a girl, if that matters)

Confession: I've never been to a bar and my first drink was when I was 20.

#28143 Whoever put this up at IU is a literal piece of human waste. The fact that someone actually thought this was funny is sad and is part of the reason rape culture exists. Hope I never have to see anything like that here. Also, that spelling is absolutely atrocious.

#28142 Some countries make you stand for a national anthem even before a movie. I find this concept ridiculous. Extreme Nationalism is also a form of Extremism that scares me a lot. At the end of the day we all are just human beings.
