#29229 I placed my trembling hand on 231's shoulder, and gave L a vacant, uncomprehending stare. My cold sweat drained along the sinews of my clammy palms. L's subtle, lusty glances subsided, and he folded his upper lip, exposing his two front teeth. This, I remembered, was one of his least endearing traits—the one I'd persistently forgotten, and by which I was constantly surprised and disgusted.
"your task," he said again, more loudly this time, "is to excuse 231 in front of us."
To this, I replied, "I thought you'd said execute."
His thick tongue slid beneath those two teeth, and he hissed at me angrily. "that's illegal, Jim, and you know it."
The others began laughing at me, and I was baffled by how I could have misheard L. Perhaps I was too distracted by his portly stature, or the way his lower lip bounced up and down whenever he talked.
Just the thought of it again aroused me, and I cautiously crossed my legs. I stole another glance at his yellowing front teeth, and that flat tongue, like an earthworm flagellating beneath them, and all was well.
"I'll excuse him," I said, playfully stroking my mustache. "I'll excuse everybody up in here."
