#7846 So I understand that people will have group meetings and work with others in Hicks in the evenings, but MY GOD ITS SO LOUD. Its freaking ridiculous. I can hear it all even with my headphones in. Like I said, I can understand some noise, but I feel like I'm in a cafeteria more than a library. None of the other libraries on campus I've been to seem to have this problem. And the only reason I'm in Hicks instead of any other library is because Hicks is open and I'll be here late. The noise does not help me stay focused and get done sooner either. So, thanks a lot all you loud annoying people. Does anyone else have this problem?

#7845 My left hand has been stuck in a box of cheez-its for the past 20 minutes. I could remove it with some help from my right hand, but that would require effort. I have accepted the fact that I will have a box of cheez-its as a hand until I find the motivation to fix my problem.

#7844 I think I'm the least intelligent person at Purdue. I struggle in every class and no matter how much i study, when test time comes i usually blank or can't think. I'm so tired of feeling like a failure and having an overbearing amount of stress 24/7.

#7842 There are a few things people here need to realize about racism. It's more than just blatantly hating on and attacking people of color. Racism includes ignorance, which is something I see a ton of. Feeling the need to ask people about their heritage or making assumptions about someone based on how they look (like being confused when someone doesn't have an accent) are also examples of this. Fetishization (singling out people of specific races and ethnicities for dating and sex) is gross because it shows you think of us firstly as our race or ethnicity rather than as who we actually are. Cultural appropriation (wearing a war bonnet - the Native American equivalent of a Medal of Honor - as a fashion accessory or growing dreads if you aren't black - which requires you to stop washing your hair and perpetuates the idea that black dreads are dirty, which they aren't because that isn't how black dreads work) is part of the problem, as is dressing up like a "Mexican" for Breakfast Club (as a Latina, seeing that hurt deeply because it reminded me that there are white people who see me and my family a joke). Racist jokes, while they may seem harmless, are frequent and casual reminders to us PoC that, to many people, we hold a lesser place in society. They call to our minds all the times we have been treated poorly based solely on our heritage.
Racism is not limited to conscious bias. You don't have to be actively trying to enforce the racial hierarchy in order to contribute to it. And every time you cry, "Stop being so sensitive!" or "Not all white people are like that!" (which we are aware of; we aren't stupid), you show that you care more about defending yourself than about helping PoC.
