I studied psychology extensively, ad am now pursuing a graduate degree that rivals some of the knowledge of my professors. I am well-attuned to the forms of micro-aggressions that people may not be aware they are really giving off, even though a part of them intends to impose power and force upon victims. A lot of people in society happen to think that things they say- about race, gender, depression, trauma in a perfectly serious and yet completely oblivious tone. When you look at the ways that people of certain minorities or groups-women, Asians, African-Americans, for example, are sensitive to the ways that people speak of them based on wrongful assumptions, you can't blame them because of the experiences they went through and some of the truly painful memories your words may bring up. Please try to be more understanding and not just dismiss what you say as a "joke"-- because to them, it definitely is not.
