#18630 I was recently made aware of proposed change to university policy that would allow law abiding students to carry their legally owned handgun on the campus they pay dearly to attend. I am sure the very thought this change causes many to conjure up images of drunk frat boys running around campus with full-sized Glocks in the waistband of their gym shorts, only slightly concealed by their “Too Frat to Care” tank. However, as an avid shooter, License to Carry holder, and fraternity brother, I can assure you that this would not be the case.

With such an emotionally charged topic, it’s important to fill our uppermost thoughts with facts rather than feelings. For example, it is much more productive to say, “Allowing law abiding citizens to carry on campus has never caused an increase in violent crime” than it is to say, “Someone may feel uncomfortable not knowing who has a gun.”

I could certainly type out a seemingly endless list of statistics proving how firearms are lowering crime all across the country, however I have full confidence in Purdue’s students’ ability to use Google. Instead, I would like to point out how this is not merely a debate of safety, but also of rights. The founding fathers, the US Constitution, the US Supreme Court, the Indiana Constitution, and the Superintendent of the Indiana State Police all agree on my right to keep and bear arms. However, a handful of unelected officials have decided to strip responsible students of their rights, without student input or expert opinion.

More than anyone, I want Purdue’s policies to reflect the wants and needs of its students. It is important however to insure the decision makers are well informed with factual evidence. Never have I met an anti-gunner who is knowledgeable and experienced in the field of firearms, firearm safety, and firearm culture, yet countless times I have met anti-gunners who’s firearm knowledge is comparable to that of a house cat. I believe this pro-self defense policy change will be met with great opposition, not because guns are evil, but because my peers are led to believe guns are evil.

I am sure my opponents will question the responsibility of their fellow classmates. They will argue college campuses have substantially greater amounts of alcohol, drugs, and stress than the general public. Although they would not be wrong in saying this, they would be overlooking a key factor in their rhetoric; my peers and I are no more, and no less responsible when we pass over the arbitrarily line around our campus. It is important we realize this aforementioned line has no magical powers; it does not transform me from responsible gun owner to belligerent frat boy, and it certainly does not deter criminals and the mentally insane from carrying their firearms. This invisible campus boundary didn’t’ stop Cody Cousins, nor does it stop the ever growing number of violent criminals we hear about via text alert at 3am on a Tuesday night. Somehow, despite all rational evidence, despite the terrible things that have happened in our past, there are still people who treat this line like the Gungan deflector shield from Phantom Menace. These people actually believe the current “feel good policy” protects them from any harm. It is these same people who are not bothered by the study by Purdue’s own Eric Deitz, which states an average shooter claims three victims a minute, while the average police response time is around 10 minutes.

Carrying a firearm is not about masculinity or power, it is about protection and responsibility. Twice, the United States Supreme Court has ruled that police have no obligation to protect citizens (Warren v. District of Columbia, 1981and Bowers v. DeVito, 1982). Since these rulings, personal protection has become an individual responsibility, one that I take very seriously.

#18629 To post 18626: Yes, their parents probably bought the cars for those kids. Yes, they are privileged. Yes they can afford to spend money on whatever luxury items they choose to buy. So what's the big fucking hairy deal about that? You don't know their story - maybe one of them is an insane coding genius and has done lots of software work for companies (I don't know specific terms for this field so sue me). One of them might be a financial genius and trade stocks and make thousands.
