I wish they would not say that in front of my friends--especially my liberal arts friends. I know plenty of brilliant students studying communication, history, etc., but do they ever get comments like, "You must be very smart" from strangers? Probably not.
That's just not fair.

#20635 PSA TO ALL FRESHMEN THAT HAVEN'T GONE THROUGH A MIDWEST (OR WORSE) WINTER:
1. Buy a coat. Not a jacket, not a sweatshirt. A /coat/. Buy one of those fluffy insulated marshmallow things. No one is going to care what you look like when it’s 20 below.
2. Wear that shit. If you’re cold, don’t think you’ll look stupid because everyone is staring at the ground to keep the wind out of their eyes anyway.
3. Buy some fleece lined gloves, all the better if they have those cool tech fingertips. Keep them on, and buy more than one pair because you will lose one. I
4. If you wear nothing else keep your toes, ears, and fingers warm. (These will get hypothermia or frostbite the fastest.) Gloves, hats and thick socks.
5. Black ice is a very dangerous thing. It’s when the sidewalk looks simply wet but it’s actually ice that’s just very thin and clear. Be very careful and assume that if you see wet ground, it’s icy and WALK CAREFULLY.
6. Speaking of which. DON’T BIKE WHEN THERE IS ICE OR SNOW ON THE GROUND. DON’T BE STUPID. (Serious pet peeve of mine. The wind alone will burn your face but it’s incredibly hard to keep steady.)
7. As far as the busses go, don’t expect buses to stop at a busstop if it’s on a hill if it’s icy out. They can’t let people on while stopped on a hill, their brakes aren’t strong enough.
8. Busses will get full. Busses will pass you because they don’t have room. Don’t yell at drivers, it’s not their fault. Plan ahead and try to get the bus earlier than you usually do just in case it passes you by.
9. If you have pets (specifically dogs) don’t feel dumb if you think they need a coat or boots. Dogs with webbed feet can get impacted ice in their toes which can give them frostbite. If you have a greyhound or a dog with a thin coat they really should have a coat, don’t listen to the people who say otherwise. Take care of your furry friend and remember that they need walks everyday, not just when it’s nice out.
