#24455 Why is it that whenever CS/IT people represent themselves they have to do things like put cat pictures or crazy wacky zany meme shit (like the article linked above)? I am just wondering because I don't recall physics having its own weird cultural baggage associated with it in the same way that CS/IT shit seems to.

I am majoring in Math and CS and I have noticed that a looooot of people are manchildren who literally still play with toys. In the CS computer lab there are often adults playing magic the gathering and the other day there were like 4 people talking at length about legend of zelda canon (adult people). They make stupid internet focused jokes etc. Something else that I have noticed that actually CS or IT professionals I have met, as well as those with CS doctorates generally seem normal. Does school and workplaces weed these people out? Do they change their behaviors? Is there a cultural shift that is not yet evident in the higher levels of the fields or academia? I am super hopeful that it is something that will self correct as time goes on. I mean I imagine that most that flunk out will be replaced by more but at least I won't be in class with them anymore.

Also holy shit at the crazy misogyny. Like it is kind of scary level.

It is just kind of confusing to me because it seems like this sort of wacky zany shit in the case of CS makes it seem like it isn't a science but rather a bunch of bullshit.

I also hardly ever hear people discussing math or CS but have heard plenty of nerdmos theorizing about Marvel Superhero movies.
