#1041 It's clear most people don't know how elections work. Because we have a winner-take-all system, third party candidates will never win unless they have an enormous personal war chest or qualify for public financing (requires something like 7% of the popular vote LAST election for the presidency I believe). Therefore, voting third party is essentially taking a vote away from whoever is your second choice. You can say it's a moral objection, but then again that's how Gore lost to Bush in 2000, because of Nader.

Second, people are getting way too freaked out about public interest groups. Want to know the largest resource that public interest puts into elected representatives? Information. Not money. Is there some quid-pro-quo aspect to campaign donations, either with soft money or hard money? Of course, but one confession I saw previously took the Marxist approach that money is the absolute controller of the government and that every single vote is decided by corporate backers.

TL;DR: Stop trying to live in a utopian world where every voter is informed and money doesn't matter in an election. Campaign finance reform can happen but it's not going to make some guy from rural Kansas who no one has heard of win. Just do what you can to make the right decisions with the system we've got

#1040 Macalester students weep and mourn at the loss of the liberal senate, while cringing at the horrors of a Republican controlled Congress.

#1037 Dear students of Macalester and young people in general :
Voting won't solve the world's problems.
Nearly every politician out there has sold out to a corporation, union, or *insert other type of special interest here* and does not give a fuck about you.
These politicians sell out to special interests because said special interests provide the money to convince the electorate that their candidate will change things.
Once they are elected, they will proceed to preserve the status quo and make their donors happy by writing laws and regulations that make the special interests richer.
TLDR:
Don't vote. Google "crony capitalism." Wake up.

#1035 i think about killing myself daily because you assaulted me. you have no idea how much your actions have impacted me. every day it gets worse, and worse, and worse. i have no idea if i can even keep going for much longer. i am unsure if i will even make it to the end of this week. i doubt that i will.

please. just talk to me. you know who you are. even if it's just a single word.
