#1129 Hello whiners. Let's talk about whining, and why you do it.
A) Human's live in groups primarily for security. If you're injured or incapacitated, your group will see you through the hard times. This means everyone in the group must work harder, but is also safer from calamities themselves. Of course, this system begs to be abused. People can make up or exaggerate some ailment or disadvantage in order to benefit from tribal resources without putting in effort themselves. This is why we complain. Complaining convincingly was evolutionary beneficial (whether you've really been injured or not). This also explains why we argue with whiners. Ever feel the urge to tell someone their whining is bullshit, or that everyone has that problem, or that their problem isn't really a big deal (compared, perhaps, to your own problems)? This is the evolutionary way of the group protecting itself from exploitation, and for individuals to justify their miserliness (towards the whiner) to the group.
B) Its sexy. Demonstration of personal hardship means that your failures look less bad and your successes look better. If Runs With Buffalo goes on a hunt and snags a boar that's great. What a sexy, successful guy. But if he tells everyone about how he had to do it with his bear hands, that's even sexier. What spectacular genes this individual must have to accomplish so much even with this handicap. Perhaps I will have his babies.
So there you have it whiners. You are vindicated. Keep letting everyone know how hard your life is.

#1125 Seeing all this MPIRG drama from afar has made me SO glad I'm abroad this semester and not dealing with it up close. That said, can someone give me the spark notes version of what the hell is happening? Summary of the situation/why people are in such an uproar over it?

#1124 I understand the concern about the whole MPIRG student activity fee, but I also think it's completely ridiculous that so many otherwise reasonable people have chosen to incessantly hate on the whole organization over it. Sure, they have made some mistakes in the past, but no movement is perfect. I don't think $12 and spite is worth shutting down the most/only well-established political group on campus. MPIRG is full of reasonable people who want to make a positive impact on our community. Maybe we should try collaborating with them to improve future campaigns rather than going all mob-mentality on them.
