#1187 So I've had this consuming obsession with trying to start a relationship, recently. But I'm definitely more into it than she is. How do I know that I really want her, and not just a relationship in general?

#1183 Confession: I'm pro life. Here's why.
Lets consider the arguments. People who are pro choice make many arguments for why abortion is good, including societal benefits and the rights of women to control their bodies. People who are pro life, however, only make one argument: that abortion is equivalent to infanticide. It's murder. This makes the debate pretty simple. If abortion is murder, then its wrong because murder trumps everything. If it isn't murder, then its good because of the benefits. So is it murder?
You have to bend over backwards pretty far to think that it isn't. The most common argument I've heard is that fetuses are less conscious than babies which made it out of the womb, and consciousness is the standard for determining if we get to kill something or not. This argument is weak, because the gradual development of consciousness in the development of a human doesn't match up with our bright line ethical cutoff (killing slightly conscious fetus is no big deal, killing somewhat conscious new born baby is worst thing ever, just as bad if not worse than killing a fully conscious adult).
The argument that abortion is murder is vastly stronger. Why are we repulsed by infanticide? Because infanticide is horrifically evolutionary unfavorable. Abortion is the functional equivalent of infanticide because you're killing what COULD HAVE BEEN a person before they get a chance to live life. The only reason we're not repulsed by it is it hasn't been around long enough for us to develop a repulsion to it. Abortion is wrong, we just haven't had enough time to develop the innate knowledge of that like we have for infanticide.
If you are open minded, you will see the logic in this argument.

So decide now: Do you base your ethical opinions on principle and reason, or do you base it on what your mommy and daddy and college told you growing up?

#1182 If you went to winter ball and didn't have a good time, or didn't like the atmosphere, I'm genuinely sorry. It sucks paying for an event that you don't enjoy. That being said, I wouldn't be critical of the event for being the way it is. Yes, people get wasted and make a mess and are obnoxious. But more importantly, they have fun. A lot of fun. That's what counts. The event isn't about being classy, or trying to represent macalester is some positive way to the outside community. Its about letting loose and having a good time. We're the ones who pay for winter ball (both with the ticket and through the activity fee), and as far as events paid for by our activity fee money go, this one might actually come close to being worth the price.

#1184 I secretly hoped the football team would lose. Why? After receiving automated emails from the college (reportedly written by BriRo) about the football team's success, and after having to unfollow Macalester's social media outlets for solely highlighting athletics and the advertising gimmicks run by Macalester staff, I wonder whether the sky is also falling at my own alma mater. Has Macalester allowed individuals with absolutely no knowledge of academics to be the college's mouthpiece? Are we becoming a community like many others that only values commercialism and athletics over academic rigor? I'm beginning to worry.
