#1967 Not OP, but I'm reposting this to Mac Confessions because apparently Mac Confessions should be working now, and everyone at Mac should read this: Many students who attend UWCs have overcome exceptional adversity and don't come from what many would consider to be privileged backgrounds. That being said, attending UWC is a privilege. Privileges are not all-encompassing. They don't define every part of your identity. By attending Macalester we are all privileged people, even if we have worked hard to get here. Many intelligent and talented people who will never be accepted here work very hard too. If you attended UWC, you are privileged in a way that many of your peers aren't for the same reasons. My high school education was not nearly as rigorous or personally enriching as people say UWC is. I am constantly reminded of this by UWC students who unintentionally put me down because I didn't learn or experience the same things in high school as they did. Recently the Mac Weekly ran a feature with this kind of rhetoric (such as the perceived immaturity of domestic first years because of our lack of international schooling). I am so grateful for the UWC students on our campus, many of whom I count as my closest friends. That being said, please, if you've been to a UWC or if you haven't, remind yourself that there are shades of gray here. Just because someone has not had the opportunities that you've had doesn't make them a lesser person. Likewise, just because someone went to a UWC don't assume they are from wealthy backgrounds or don't want to befriend you.
