As a sociology major and a student of color, I feel that I have to point out something that I have increasingly noticed over time here at Augsburg College. Don't get me wrong, I like sociology and I like being a part of this campus, but I have noticed that when I talk with other soc majors about soc topics or issues or articles or just anything soc-related, I find myself disagreeing, disappointed, and sometimes even a little annoyed with who I'm talking with. Yes, as soc majors we should be open minded and not assume the stereotype of a person as a first impression. Yes, as soc majors we should also do the opposite and keep an open mind about certain, particular stereotypes and how they are still a problem today whether or not you want to acknowledge it. Yes, as soc majors we should be inclusive. But don't pretend like there are problems don't exist anymore when they clearly do. Don't disregard the personal troubles or the social issues of one specific person/situation just because it hasn't personally happened to you. Remember, WE ARE WORKING WITH PEOPLE. PEOPLE ARE COMPLEX INDIVIDUALS. This isn't chemistry or physics or biology where we can have high levels of control over our variables and our relations. We have to consider the complexity of our human variables. That being said, I hope my fellow soc majors do not take this as an attack but more as a critique towards improvement. Please, take thoughtful consideration of this....
