#5682 Of course what you said struck a nerve, the music department if you care to be a part of it is a family in its own way. You attack one of us, you attack all of us. We can be dysfunctional but we still love this department and the people in it. I'm going to say this because I feel I can give an honest response based on my experience as a music major at Rollins. Being has many demands minors do not, not to say you're not a musician, though I don't know if you are, but the fact remains the demands, expectations, and workload are VERY different for a major. Yes, it's true some people get more opportunities than others. But there are many things that go into that; talent, work ethic, ability to work well with others and on their own, their attitude, and of course their commitment. I agree the industry is hard and I do think in some cases there is favoritism (like there should not be alumni allowed to partake in master classes which should be just for current students, but I digress), the reality is politics are a part of every career and are present in varying degrees across the board. I've been in more than two music departments and I can tell you politics are always present, it is just a part of it. It's a game and you learn to play it, if you don't that is your choice but you also won't reap the benefits of it. I was blessed to have wonderful teachers, even the ones I didn't like or who irritated me taught me something valuable, many things in fact. Things that made me a better musician, a stronger woman and that is what matters. I got an education and I never performed solos or bothered to waste time placing blame on what others got because it wasn't about that. My education was about me. Same as yours.

#5681 @5674 take a deep breath, she's graduating this semester and since the ceremony of transition already happened I believe she's already an alumna. I'm not sure she's worthy of being an alumna of our sorority, but that's how it is. Now let's just hope this president can do better and make things better, though in my humble opinion she isn't. On a different note, I miss SB too :)

#5680 @5672 I'm not even associated with the music department but I have to speak up because you're being ridiculous. What is your definition of common knowledge? Because it sounds pretty different from the campus I know. I don't know many music majors, but I've never heard anyone say that the music department is "elitist." They're probably the most down to earth people at this school. They play frisbee and wave to people when you walk by their building. They're basically a bunch of grown-up band geeks. If you want elitist, you should go to the theater department or some of the greek organizations.

#5676 @5673: you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. However, take a look at other departments on campus: mainly the ones concerning the arts, like theater, and writing. There are politics and games that go on, and networking is a very important component. It is noticeable in all departments, yet the ratio is heavily skewed in the music department. Yes, the arts are competitive, yes one must make connections. Yes, one must get to know some professors better. But honestly as a minor you don't get much exposure to them, and for those who have a chip on their shoulder, it's incredibly hard to talk to them. Try to see things from a different perspective instead of wallowing in your bias. Again, some professors over there ROCK. But sadly to get anywhere in that dept. Networking becomes kissing ass, like it or not. I've learned a lot, but given the choice, I wouldn't even minor at music at Rollins.I've been rejected in different fields in the arts many times but I've gone on despite that, and excelled. thick skin is a necessity. Don't lecture me on my life perception, unless you know me well enough to do so. Finis. Love and peace
