Religion does play a role in society, but it is not a healthy one. There are a handful of states that BAN atheists from holding public office. Also, think of this: If you're right and there isn't a heaven and hell afterwards than nothing happens, but if I'm right... Besides, religion plays a very important role in society. It dictates morals and the want for a common good, why would you want to destroy that?
Lastly, those who bash Christians that like to say "If there is a God, why doesn't he stop all the evil in the world from happening?" It's called FREE WILL. God gave us the ability to make choices and sadly some people decide to do evil instead of good.
