I want to be the neutral voice of reason sometimes by making sure that all sides and perspectives of an issue are understood before anyone jumps to conclusions, even if I don't necessarily agree with all of the perspectives. However, I also know that someone will misunderstand what I'm trying to do and call me racist or sexist or bigoted in some way when I'm really not. I just want everyone to know all the factors first so that some type of understanding and maybe even some compromises can be made so that there is more us all working together rather than an us vs them mentality. It makes me hate my understanding nature.
I've been at Hamline for two years now, and I've only heard a handful of people say thank you when they pick up their drinks at Starbucks. The baristas have to work at a breakneck pace, get every order right, and maintain a cheerful attitude even in the midst of a massive rush. The least you as a customer can do is thank them for their hard work, and it only takes an extra 5 seconds to do. I don't work at Starbucks myself, but I'd know I'd appreciate some acknowledgement.
I hate when I hear white people talking about how there is no white privilege. When they discuss racism it's very offensive. These people are saying that "yellow" is not a derogatory name for asians. They say that if "yellow" is racist, "white" should be too. Why do people think blatantly pointing out differences is okay? We all are just trying to fit in and be "normal" so what's the point when white people keep pointing out they have all the power?
