The student body at Hamline University would do very well to thicken its collective skin. Discourse here is going to hell in a handbasket, every third word spoken is sure to offend someone, and direct face-to-face communication is all but dead. So I'm going to bulletpoint this for you kids once and for all. Hopefully I’m not the only one with this viewpoint. -Yes, white privilege exists. It is a social construct devised by feudal lords in colonial America to divide white servants from black servants to prevent an uprising against the ruling class, and has stood in place for centuries for the same purpose. It IS deplorable. However, this does NOT mean that races other than whites are incapable of racism. The more you divide the races from what they're capable of- good or bad- you deepen the institutionalized divide and fulfill the original mission of constructed white privilege. We are all, therefore, conquered. We must work as one human race for the advancement of ALL people through progressive social policy that benefits all citizens and raises the baseline for all of us. -So you/your favored candidate didn't win homecoming royalty. SO WHAT? Leave that shit in high school. I can't believe some of you still think it carries substance. There are much more constructive ways to approach Hamline’s social dynamic. That being said… -GO OUT AND MEET PEOPLE. Say what's on your mind. Settle your gripes with someone face to face. Prop your doors open. Ask to tag along. Find your niches and social coteries. It takes practice, and it does suck for a while, but it is worth it. You won’t be the king of all of them, and not everyone will accept you, but just being chill and genuine instead of standoffish and evasive will at least get you some good acquaintances in just about any circle. Don’t take what you have for granted. -"Mean Girls" is not something to strive for. That was the message of the movie, last I checked. Knock it off. -Damn, this is worse than the Like-A-Little phase Hamline went through. Someone got your eye? Talk to him/her. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and if you blow it, whatever. Call it practice. Your interests will rotate between different people. Welcome to college. You only have so much time to do it, and trust me; there is no greater regret than missed opportunity. -Friend-zone is a euphemism, a badly given name for lack of romantic interest used by both the "zoner" and the "zonee." If there is a friendship there, cultivate that. It may surprise you in a good way. If not, call it what it is; rejection, whether you’re giving it or receiving it. Swallow that pill and move on. But whatever you do; don’t be manipulative, be it with pretenses of romance or friendship, or being “MN nice” and not being forward with your intentions (pursuit or rejection) for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. -If you want to get out experiment sexually in a responsible manner with multiple partners that doesn’t fuck with people’s emotions, cheers to you. Doesn’t make you a slut. If you’re going after people with SOs or cheating on your SO, then you are acting like one. Stop it. Validate yourself by legitimate means. Oh, and there's no shame in being a virgin, either. People can appreciate that too. If someone judges one way or the other if people are responsibly going about their sexuality, then that's wrong. Hopefully this lends some of you a little perspective. Now shut your laptops and go outside.
