For my white brothers, and to a lesser degree my white sisters, the sooner you get that you have white privilege, the sooner you can clean that up and help get rid of it. You didn't ask for it, it wasn't your choice, nor your fault. There's a whole world of people you can be in community with, but white privilege is part of racism, part of white supremacy and its got to go. You're going be in an ever shrinking minority. It's not going to cost you your safety, just your comfort zone. You can be part of the solution. (PS. I said my white sisters to a lesser degree because of the omnipresence of sexism, most already understand of it is to be an "Other" in this society.)

Hamline Social Justice is the exact opposite of what Social Justice is all about. Social Justice is "the ability people have to realize their potential in the society where they live," and Privilege is "a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people." What Social Justice encompasses is the ability to recognize where you have more rights than other sexes, genders, races, economic classes, etc., and become humble in it. You realize where some people have it different than you do, either better or worse. If you have it better than someone else, you "check your privilege" to remember where you come from and where they come from and how life might be more difficult for them. What this entails is that you treat everyone with respect- if you are privileged, you don't have a "holier-than-thou" attitude about it. You also keep in mind the difficulties of the past for certain sexes, genders, races, economic classes, etc. However, you respect everyone while remembering that EVERYONE, of ALL different walks of life, has a DIFFERENT STORY. This is where Hamline Social Justice comes to a fault- People automatically judge others on their privilege by what they see, and they berate them for it, while not knowing their full story or if they even KNOW what Social Justice is. It doesn't help by completely shutting someone down or saying "You ass, you poor baby, check your fucking privilege." That helps NO ONE. In order to teach Social Justice and make the world a better place, we need to educate one another- remind people to remember where they come from, remind them that there are people that have it better or worse, remind them to realize that not everyone has had the same story as them. Snarky comments, immature attitudes, and ignorance do not progress our society, and that's what Hamline Social Justice has come to represent. And frankly, it's embarrassing.

Speaking as a white man I really have to say that, from experience, we don't automatically have it easier than other people. Yes, we aren't directly hurt by prejudice, but that doesn't mean we don't deal with depression, family problems, eating disorders, etc., it just means that we don't actively face discrimination.
