Does anyone remember a book about a black (korean or vietnam) war veteran who was in an insane asylum/hospital somewhere in the north like Chicago and broke out because he heard his sister was in trouble down south. He left barefoot and these pastors helped him get down there and it turns out that this white doctor was basically doing experiments on his sister without medication etc and she was about to die.

I know this is all over the place but I'm trying to find the book. Does anyone remember?
